Dr Jason Thomas is a skilled ophthalmologist who has recently established a practice at Mediclinic Panorama in Parow, Cape Town. His journey into ophthalmology is a story of diverse experiences and a deep commitment to eye health and patient care.
Dr Thomas completed his MBChB at the University of the Free State in 2008, followed by two years as an intern doctor at the Bloemfontein Academic Complex. After completing community service in Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape, he returned to Bloemfontein where he worked in an emergency centre and as a general practitioner in 2012.
It was during his time in the Eastern Cape that Dr Thomas first encountered an eye specialist at work, which piqued his interest in ophthalmology. He moved to Kimberley to pursue further training in the field, first working in the department of urology for six months, followed by four and a half years as a medical officer in the department of ophthalmology.
Dr Thomas's formal ophthalmology qualifications include a Diploma in Ophthalmology (2014) and a Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmology (2021) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, and an MMed in Ophthalmology from Stellenbosch University in 2022.
After completing his postgraduate degree at Tygerberg Hospital in 2021, he worked in the Groote Schuur Hospital ophthalmology department during 2022 to receive further training in vitreoretinal surgery, including attending the Thessaloniki Vitreoretinal Summer School in Greece. His training and experience have equipped him with a broad range of skills in diagnosing and treating vitreoretinal and general ophthalmic diseases.
His commitment to ophthalmology extends beyond his practice. Dr Thomas has been involved in numerous community outreach programs, including routine cataract and clinic outreaches at Vredendal Hospital and surgical missions with the South African National Council for the Blind. He has also participated in routine flying clinics in the Northern Cape, providing much-needed eye care in remote areas.
He routinely attends national and international ophthalmology congresses and meetings in order to be at the forefront of developments in the field.
Outside of his professional life, Dr Thomas is an avid sports enthusiast. He and his wife, an anaesthesiologist, enjoys surfing, sport climbing, trail running, and film and digital photography. Together, they embrace a lifestyle that balances their demanding careers with a zest for adventure and a love of the outdoors.
As Dr Thomas embarks on his new chapter at Mediclinic Panorama, he brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and a genuine passion for improving the lives of his patients through exceptional eye care. His diverse background, from personal training to advanced ophthalmology, reflects a dynamic and holistic approach to health and well-being.
